Now, let me share my research. Today I am going to talk about the issue of legalizing same-sex marriage in hong kong. In my point of view, I support legislate gay marriage in hong kong as it will bring political and economic benefits. For political aspect, as hong kong’s core value is freedom, passing the new bill would help hong kong to stick on its main belief. A publication released by Department of Justice, telling that the article 23 in basic law acknowledges all hong kong residents shall be equal in front of the law which highlights the importance of parity as everyone should be the same in front of the law. Moreover, Solomon and Tiemann (2012) express that the government would be regulating and defining the martial-status of its residents when people with same gender are not allowed to be married. So, if hong kong not enact the homosexual marriage, it would be questionable that whether hong kong could achieve its core value.
Other than political benefit, financial benefits could also be gained after passing this bill. Fitzgerald and Homer (2013) estimated the wedding spending would be probably boosted after the gay marriage bill passed since more gay couples would be authorized to be married. And Hildebrandt then predicted that over $370 million would be generated if California legalize same-sex marriage. Instead of weeding spending, Boyd claims that the tourism revenue would also be surged more gay travelers will be attracted by the new law. As the result, it is possible that the economic growth could be boosted by legislating homosexual marriage in hong kong.
It seems that gay marriage could bring different advantages to hong kong, but there are still some opponents against legalizing same-sex marriage in hong kong. The opponents contend that it is doubtful on whether the purpose of marriage could be achieved if gay couples have the right to be married. Young and Nathanson (2007) claim that the homosexuality marriage may violate the aim of marriage...
