One of the many problems that exists in nursing is the overall lack of hand hygiene. Hand hygiene is the first line of defense against disease and if done properly and often enough can and will save lives and prevent sickness. The problem in most medical settings in America is not the lack of supplies as it is some third world countries, but it is the lack of the use of supplies. Patients’, staff, and visitors fail to provide proper hand hygiene throughout the day although the necessary supplies are readily available to them. Hand hygiene must become a top priority and not just something we do when we are being watched, failure to wash hands can result in negative outcomes for patients. “Across all settings, patients can acquire bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, urinary tract infections, chest/respiratory infections or gastrointestinal infection” (WHO, 2016).

My research approach is an appropriate choice for my proposal because of the importance that hand hygiene play in the role health and safety of patients, staff, and the public. The use of primary and secondary sources is most appropriate for my research. The method that I intend to use is the randomized controlled trial set is several isolation rooms at my place of employment. I also intend to use secondary sources that include peer reviewed journal articles and magazines.

I intend to research and answer ways in which hand hygiene can be increase across the health care setting. In addition, propose a cost effective way to promote hand hygiene while being that will include the input of stakeholders and promote safety for all.
