Should Hand Guns Be Outlawed?
“Assuming that gun control is ineffective, the question still remains, why? One reason why gun control is ineffective because, it simply does not influence the behavior of criminals in their efforts to obtain and use firearms. Law abiding citizens can be expected to conform to the law andobtain permits, register guns, and enroll in firearm safety courses. In contrast, there would be no surprise if it were found that criminals regularly violate the law by purchasing guns on illegal black markets or by stealing them.” says Morehouse and Wanner.
Supporters of gun control argue that if stricter gun laws are placed and are enforced, there will be fewer deaths. Statistics show that more people die in automobile accidents than gun violence. In 2005 nearly 43,000 people were killed and about 5,000 were innocent pedestrians. In this same year about 30,000 people died from gun related injuries and only about 12,000 were homicide victims.
Guns aren't good or bad but the real weapon is people and their rage. Anything can be used as a weapon to kill someone: knives, bats, shoes and nails are just some examples. Opinions have been formed that the issue of guns, is just an cover up for the real issue in our country”s rage. Just like in the latest gun tragedy at Virginia Tech, both arguments of better control is valid and invalid at the same time. Even if more secure laws were put into place, no one knows what would have happened. Although the guns could still have been purchased illegally or other tactics might have been taking such as a bomb.
For the most part gun laws can protect people against gun related crimes. Even health issues killed more people than guns. 654,092 died from Heart disease, 123,884 Chronic lower respiratory diseases and 72,815 from Diabetes.
