Brittney Lane Jennifer Sisk English 1100 sec 132 10 August 2007 Handle With Care “Be careful with your boxes, it may be the only Christmas your child will ever see,” I heard over the loud speaker right before I tape my box shut and send it down the conveyer belt. When it got to the other end was when the real excitement started. Many shoe boxes were packed tightly and shipped to some of the regions of the world where children typically wouldn’t receive Christmas presents. But this Christmas, they were going to be receiving some of the most precious gifts they had ever known. Every year, I participate in a project organized by Samaritan’s Purse called Operation Christmas Child. This is a program in which churches collect shoe boxes filled with toys and useful items that children need, but may not be fortunate enough to have. This not only taught the volunteers and people involved the joy of giving, but it also gave an opportunity to spread the word of the main reason of the season- Jesus Christ and the day of his birth. The next stop was the assembly line. This was the most exciting part of Operation Christmas Child. In the assembly line you have many different tasks such as opening the box, checking the materials inside, replacing some of the prohibited items and then sending them down the line. This is my favorite part because you actually get to see what is in each individual box. Sometimes you wonder why anyone would put those particular items in that box but, God has a plan for each one and will send it to the right child. While we are there they tell us special stories about delivered boxes. There is this one story they tell every year that always sticks with me. There was this one box and all it had was pairs of socks, nothing else, just socks. The people who went through the box thought to themselves what a dumb Christmas gift, and how could any child get any enjoyment out of socks?
