The History of Hannaford
The History of Hannaford Hannaford is a retailer that began in 1883, selling excellent quality produce in Maine. It has since grown into the one of the largest food retailers operating in the United States. (“History & People,” 2007) Hannaford’s history shows how a small store has turned into a major food retailer by expanding, adding healthy foods and easy ways of identifying them, giving back to the earth by implementing plans of the first platinum status supermarket ever, and how a breach in security has changed Hannaford. After the Hannaford Brothers: Arthur (the originator), Howard, and Edward relocated in 1920 (as a top produce wholesaler) to a five-story warehouse in Portland (ME); they soon fell into a new realm of retailing—from wholesaling (1939)—by opening their first supermarket in 1944. (Kolman, 2007.) In the early 1960’s, Walter Whittier makes his first moves as President by advancing Hannaford Bros. expansion when he made two purchases: a supermarket chain and a specialty distributor named Progressive Distributors. Jim Moody becomes president in 1971 as he aims at establishing the first Wellby Drug Store and trucking company. (“History & People,” 2007) Hannaford Trucking helped the company increase profits by being able to distribute and deliver goods to their supermarkets by using backward integration (Kolman, 2007) Hugh Farrington becomes CEO in 1992 as sales double to $2 billion. Evidently, Hannaford was seeing a direct correlation between increasing their profits and by its’ expansion. They wanted to become even larger. In 1994, Hannaford grows and expands by obtaining 20 stores from Wilson’s Supermarkets (located in N. and S. Carolina). A year later, a new distribution center in Butner, North Carolina was created to decrease costs for the southeast Hannaford’s involving distribution of its’ products.
