Understanding Work-Related Injuries
When an employee is injured on-the- job, the injury must be reported to the employer within a certain time. Nearly all states need a statement in writing. When the state is notified, then the employer has to notify the state workers’ compensation office and the insurance carrier, also within a specific time. In some situations, a medical service order is given to the physician who provides treatment. For the most part, the injured worker must be attended to by a provider chosen by the employer or insurance carrier. Some employers have an agreement with a managed care organization for services. In these cases, the client must be examined and cared for by a physician in the managed care plan’s network. If the worker declines to agree with the request, services may not be permitted (Valerius, Bayes, Newby and Seggern, 2008).
