Healing Hospital Paper
Hospitals in general can be a very stressful, exhausting environment to work in from not only the healthcare professionals’ aspect but as well as the patients’ perspective. Hospitals have a tendency to create anxiety as many times life and death are at a constant tug of war. This paper will discuss the effects of a healing hospital environment on not only the patient, but their loved ones as well as the staff involved in their care.
A true healing environment consists of social, psychological, spiritual, physical, and behavioral aspects, if all of these parts are addressed a patient can obtain a true complete healing environment (Horowitz, 2008). The first component of a healing hospital is a healing physical environment in order to achieve this, the noise levels must be a bare minimum or next to none to encourage patients to sleep as this can promote cell regeneration on top of fostering time for spirituality (Eberst, 2008). The second component of healing is enabling staff to work more efficiently, providing additional privacy and security and to utilize technology (Eberst, 2008). Examples of this component are having separate elevators, up to date equipment for use by the staff, skylights in patient rooms and “live music”. The third and final component is to foster a culture of radical loving care, this concept traces back to the healthcare providers’ roots in the medical field, and the staff can then be reminded of their passion for the career they have chosen. Through this component the staff must possess compassionate qualities with a focus on a holistic health approach. All of these required components have a basis in boosting a patients’ spirituality, if the patient is allotted these factors the overall experience will produce a positive healing outcome.
