Psychological Problems: Its Affects on Health and Behavior
Interaction between the nervous and immune systems provides a physiological basis for psychosomatic medicine (Sternberg, E., & Gold, P. 2002). The immune system has powerful influence on the nervous system and behavior. Anomalies of immune system function can cause diseases of the nervous system, which manifest in psychiatric disease. It is clear that effective defense against infections requires a complex coordination of the activities of the nervous and immune systems, and that abnormalities in the relationships between the two systems can cause disease (Sternberg, E., & Gold, P. 2002). Behavior refers to the actions or reactions of an object or organism, usually in relation to the environment.
Behavior can be conscious or unconscious, overt or covert, and voluntary or involuntary. In animals, behavior is controlled by the endocrine system and the nervous system. The complexity of the behavior of an organism is related to the complexity of its nervous system. Organisms with complex nervous systems have a greater capacity to learn new responses and thus adjust their behavior. The immune system is the body’s biological defense mechanism that protects against foreign invaders. Only in the last century have the components of that system and the ways in which they work been discovered, and more remains to be clarified.
The nervous system is the master controller of the body. Each thought, each emotion, each action---all result from the activity of this system. Through its many parts, the nervous system monitors conditions both within and outside the body. It then processes that information and decides how the body should respond, if at all.
