Health care is a multi billion-dollar business that is a necessity all over the world. There are so many changes that have been made through out the years to enhance the system. One item that has changed is moving into the world of technology. Changes have been made in every facet of the health care system. The health information technology has the potential to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care, by providing ways for providers and their patients to readily access and use health information. Initially the cost can be a barrier, but what we have seen in the medical industry that the amount of money saved is worth the initial costs. There is great potential and the private and public sectors have engaged in numerous efforts to promote its use within and across health care settings. In this paper I am going to explain what health information technology is and how it has made a difference in this industry. What is health information technology? “Health information technology enables providers to collect, store, retrieve, and transfer information electronically” (Kaushal,K., and D.W. Bates, 2001). Something so easily stated is and can be complicated in implementing. When buying IT providers have a lot of choices and must consider a multitude of functions. These functions and services usually fall in three basic categories. The categories are administrative and financial systems, clinical systems and infrastructure. Applications assist the administrative and financial system to help facilitate billing, accounting and other administrative duties. These applications are billing, general ledger, cost accounting systems, patient registration, personnel and payroll, scheduling, and electronic materials management. Working with paperless billing is much easier to do than with a huge paper trail. Submitting billing with insurance companies is cost effective since you no longer have to pay for postage and it is faster. Payments come with a few days...
