Introduction
Good evening class my name is Tammy Bell and I will be talking to you about heartworms. How many of you have a pet raise your hand? Did you know there are over 75 million Americans who have pets. And all of those pets are susceptible to heartworms. Heartworms cause your pet to have a very painful and unhealthy life that can result in the death of your pet.
Most of you have a pet or have had a pet. I have 4 dogs and 2 cats and I am crazy about them and they provide me with Love, Protection, and loyalty. I am currently a veterinary technician I have worked as a technician for 4 years. I have bred and showed horses and dogs. I have basically been around and worked with animals for most all of my life.
I would like to educate all of you on what heartworms are how they are contracted the symptoms and finally how to prevent heartworms
Body
Heartworms is a disease in dogs and cats caused by a certain type of parasite. The parasites are transmitted to your pet through mosquitoes. When the mosquito bites your pet the infective Larvae is transmitted to the bloodstream of your pet. The larvae mature into adult heartworms in about six months. They can reach up to 14 inches in length. They migrate through your pets body damaging blood vessels, resulting in severe lung and heart disease.
The signs or symptoms of heartworms in your pet are very vague, because the symptoms are the same for other illnesses in your pet. But the commonly known symptoms become less active after contracting heartworms sometimes they become very lethargic and the most notable symptom would be coughing. But like I said before these symptoms are also very common for other conditions. The best way to know whether your pet has heartworms or not is to go to your vet and have them tested for the disease. It costs only about $30.00 and only takes 15 minutes
Once you find out your pet is negative for heartworms it is highly recommended you put your pet on a heartworm...
