Susan is a single mother raising a twelve-year-old son, Thomas. His father left the two of them when he was young. Thomas blames his mother for running his father off. He is getting into trouble at home and at school. Often Susan cannot get him to do his homework or attend school. She is depressed and lost as to how she can help her son. She has come to this facility for help. The key to understanding the process is the MHF must look at the person and not the process.
Mental Health Facilitator
To adequately achieve goals for an individual or family, the MHF must get ready for the meeting. They must learn about the person and about their problems. The MHF must consider various solutions or possible resources to improve the problem. It is very important to connect with the person or family to achieve a solution.
Steps of the Mental Health Facilitation Process
1. Get Ready
a. Review your purpose and why you are helping your community. Set the stage, do not allow for distractions. Remind yourself of your role and the skills you may use in this situation. Practice with compassion, patience and dedication. Susan has been in pain for years. She suffers from depression and feels inadequate as a mother and a wife. She needs to feel comfortable to talk and get her feelings out. Thomas is angry that his father left. He may see his mother as week because she cries and battles depression. Both need a chance to talk separately.
2. Learn about the Person
a. Listen and respond to their story. Susan and Thomas may be family but their story will be different. Encourage them and this will lead to more about each person and the situation.
3. Learn about the Problem
