Heroes Then and Now
Heroes have changed so much since Beowulf’s time. Heroes were mainly kings and warriors of the country in Beowulf’s time. Heroes in this time are celebrities and athletes. This is mainly because our roles and society have changed.
Kings were very important in Beowulf’s time. If there wasn’t a king, the country would surely fall to ruins. The king is in charge of protecting his country by finding warriors that can defend the country in times of war. The king was very respected because he had such a demanding job to do. In today’s society we have a president instead of a king. Our president must keep track of foreign affairs and wars in order to protect our country. Our president must make sure that our military is prepared and ready to fight when it is needed.
In Beowulf, heroes were also warriors. The warriors were supposed to protect the country from monsters and others trying to invade. Beowulf was a warrior who was also a hero to the danes. Beowulf protected the danes by killing Grendel. Grendel was a monster who killed people who were sleeping in Herot Hall. Beowulf killing Grendel with his bare hands was an accomplishment that no ordinary man could have done.
Our heroes are athletes. They do what no other ordinary person could do, just like Beowulf. By accomplishing unordinary feats, they earn the respect from our country. They are similar to warriors because they allow people to forget about their problems. They do this because people are able to watch sports on television. Mark McGuire is a baseball hero. He has hit more homeruns than anyone else in one season. He earned respect by still being kind and caring even though he had accomplished something no one else could’ve done.
Wiglaf was another great warrior. Wiglaf had tried to save Beowulf’s life when he was in danger. All of Beowulf’s men left him to fight on his own except one, Wiglaf....
