Hierarchy assignment

Hierarchy structures vary within different businesses, smaller businesses have smaller structures compared with large organisations, but the size is not the only variable within a business’s structure, the type of structure also can vary; examples of these are pyramid structures, centralised/entrepreneur structures, collaborative structures, circular/flat structures and a matrix structure. All of these structures have positive and negative points depending on the type of business you are running.
As the diagram for Tesco’s structure shows, it has a tall structure and each level is controlled by one or more persons above them in the chain. The way in which Tesco is organised is mainly to meet their aims and objectives to be completed, they do this by close monitoring of staff members by having a structure where an each individual’s span of control is usually relatively small in numbers. This means that you don’t lose track of who is doing what, the less people in each level, the less there is to think about and it puts more focus onto getting the job done, it also means staff all pull their weight and cannot fade into the background. If the board of directors of Tesco want to improve profits by increasing the staff moral and reduce demotivated staff they will pass on some aims and objectives in this case it is instructions or a new policy which is coming into the organisation to motivate the staff, this information would reach the store manager and therefore would be passed down the hierarchy until it reaches the bottom. This also applies to problems people encounter, they will pass on the information that there is a problem and it will go up the chain until it reaches the appropriate persons. Another benefit of this structure is that workers if they have any problems can communicate with their supervisor/manager who is the next level up from them to resolve any problems or tell them what targets they need to meet for the day or week...
