Theodore Roosevelt
When you go back through history, there is much talk about who was the best president. Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States of America. As 26th president, he was the most significant person in American politics, because of his role in the Spanish-American War, The building of the Panama Canal, and his Policies.
First of all, the building of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is a marvel of engineering especially during that day and age. (C pg. 321) “On June 28, 1902, Congress authorized Teddy Roosevelt to build the Panama canal on the condition that the president could acquire from Columbia permanent control of the canal zone…” this quote tells about when Theodore Roosevelt got what he wanted, the permission to build the Canal he just needed one thing acquisition of the “canal zone.” Roosevelt didn’t just want to build the canal because he could, (A pg. 388) “Roosevelt believed that in addition to saving time, a canal would also answer strategic need to shuttle warships between Atlantic and Pacific oceans.” this tells his reasons for having a canal, it was strategic for both trade and military. Though it started off seeming like an easy job, there were bumps in the road to building this monument. (A pg. 388) “… November 3, 1902, a revolution broke but, and an independent Republic of Panama was Proclaimed… On November 6 the United states noticed panama’s independence and in less than 2 weeks a treaty was signed.” this quote shows how the U.S. was not wanting to fight, they just wanted to build a trade route that was beneficial in more than one way. Theodore Roosevelt was very, very determined to build the Canal, he would almost stop at nothing. (B pg. 524) “ That of course the Panama Canal must be dug.” This quote is from an auto biography of Teddy, and this just proves my last point of how determined he was to build this Canal.
