Higher education is a necessity in the twenty first century if an individual wants to be successful. Every single person with a good job had to go to college to get where they are today. Higher education is not only beneficial for every single individual, but it is also beneficial for our nation as a whole. College is a place for any person to set their own destiny and become independent. With the power of knowledge any person can accomplish anything. An individual would have no need to follow the footsteps of some one else they can do anything they desire. With this in mind, this is why higher education would better each individual person and it would better the entire nation.

Current president Barrack Obama believes the every person should attend at least one year of a secondary school, for example a college or university, trade schools, or some type of apprenticeship. Currently forty-five percent of Americans have not attended college. (Field, 2) If that whole entire population of people who did not attend college attended some sort of secondary school for only one year they would have earned seventy billion dollars nationwide. (Field, 2) So now the question is why do people not attend some sort of secondary schooling when statistics prove that they will be much more successful? Our current high school drop out rates and low college completion percentages make for a “prescription for economic decline”. (Field, 2) College is necessary for our nation to stay prosperous and powerful. Individuals with higher levels of education will contribute more to the government due to their higher rate of pay. In 1994, persons who went to college paid 71 percent of all income taxes while only making up 49 percent of the population. (Reaping, 14). That is an incredible amount of money that our nation is losing due to the fact that a lot of our society is not educated.
