History of Skinheads

Skinheads having originated during the 1960's in the United Kingdom, coming to the US. in the 1980's, has had much growth and change to the organization. Although the group was neither based on white power or neo-Nazism originally, some Skinheads including African-American Skinheads participated in Pakistani bashing, gay bashing, Asian bashing and hippy bashing. These acts of violence were almost always at random. The original Skinhead group had almost completely died out by 1972. The group made a revival in the late 1970's, mostly as a back lash to commercialism of punk rock music. The British Skinhead revival consisted of several white nationalist faction groups including, Blood and Honour, British Movement, Rock Against Communism, and the National Front. As a result, the media began to label all Skinhead identities as neo-Nazi. The Skinhead groups eventually made it to the US. and Europe by the 1980's. By 1988 there almost 2,000 neo-Nazi Skinheads in the US.
Skinheads usually being identified by their short hair and clothing styles. Skinhead fashions have changed since the beginning of the subculture in the 1960's, and certain clothing styles differ from place to place and different time periods. Traditional skinheads, sometimes referred to as Trojan Skinheads, still have the style of the original 1960's skinheads.Tattoos have been popular among skinheads at least since the 1970's revival. Although not as common today, many skinheads started getting tattoos on their faces and scalps. The style that originated in the United States 1980's known as hardcore punk is less strict with their clothing and uniform than that of the original skinheads.
Skinheads have been known to wear button-up shirts, V-neck sweaters, t-shirts, sweatshirts or polo shirts. Especially in North America, they often wear a black tank top as an undershirt.
