BLOOD DIAMOND! Blood diamond explores the issue of discovery through the role of diamond trading in the African civil war of the late 1990’s. We see Soloman Vandy discover an unusually large stone while being forced to dig. He buries it, knowing it might be his only means of retrieving his family. This journey of discovery unfolds and leads to several other discoveries within the film. These discoveries relate to the central themes and issues, which are friendship, racism and bravery. Edward Zwirk makes great use of expressing virtual and effective textual feature through film techniques such as lighting, sound, camera angles, sound effects, camera shots and many more methods that are successful. Edward Zwirk uses one particular texture feature that allows the movie to develop the idea of discovery. This feature is the camera angles in blood diamond. The use of various and hidden camera angles and filming the movie from sealed and unseen spaces allow the audience to feel anxious towards the movie. This feature creates the mood of fear coming from the way the angles of the camera have been set out. Examples of the angles shots that created tension in the movie where high- angled shot, low-angled shot, birds eye- shot and Dutch angle. Blood diamond relates to ideas about discovery raised in Wrack through symbolism. Maps are a symbol and a issue discussed in the movie Blood diamond because both texts; Wrack and Blood diamond relate to it. Maps find a way to make discoveries of our own. They have leaded us to discoveries in both texts, which are, we in Wrack are constantly trying to find the Portuguese Ship that was buried in the 16th century.
