Elevator Speech About a week ago, I was eating dinner with my husband, Ryan. He told me that he was thinking about going back to school. I could tell he was a little nervous about taking this big step. “So, how does this whole online deal work, anyway?” he asked. I had to pause and contemplate for a minute. Wow, where should I even start! I thought to myself. “Well,” I started to explain,”Everything and anything you have to do is online. You don’t ever have to be anywhere at specific time. The convenience is great!” “But, what about communicating with your instructor and classmates?” he questioned. “We use a method called asynchronous communication to communicate with each other in our online class forum,” I explained “Asynch… what!” He asked with a puzzled look on his face. “_Asynchronous communication_,” I said, “is a way that all the class members are able to communicate with each other without having to be online at the same time. We do this by using the classroom forum, this is an area where we are able to post and comment on discussion question and just talk and get to know each other. When we post a thread in the classroom forum is viewable for all class members to see. We have threaded discussion, by posting threads commenting on previous threads. We also have our own private forum; this forum is only viewable to me and the teacher.” “What do you use the private forum for?” Ryan asked. “We use the private forum to post our homework assignments. After I turn in a homework assignment, the instructor will grade it and leave me feedback. The feedback will pertain to the grade I received, what I could have done better, and suggestions to help reinforce what I have been taught throughout the course.” “Wow,” he exclaimed, “It sounds like everything is really organized and not as confusing as I imagined it would be!” “It really is,” I told him, “the classes fit easily into my hectic life.
