How is the child’s exploration & orientation is his physical environment complimented by the Montessori cultural materials & presentations?
Maria Montessori had a deep and understanding spiritual view about the world. Very often she talked about the physic energies and what the soul needs. Hence, she understood the importance of mind, body and spirit working together as a whole. In her educational method, she was interested in the journey rather than the destination of the result itself. She also emphasized on peace in her method of education.
“This is education, understood as a help to life; an education from birth, which feeds a peaceful revolution and unites all in a common aim, attracting them as to a single centre. Mothers, fathers, politicians: all must combine in their respect and help for this delicate work of formation, which the little child carries on in the depth of a profound psychological mystery, under the tutelage of an inner guide. This is the bright new hope for mankind.” (The Absorbent Mind, Chapter 2. pg. 15)
In addition to that, she believed that it was vital for the child to be given the connection about the impression of the world around him. Thus, she created the cosmic plan. This cosmic plan has a set of principles to guide teachers to nurture and stimulate the child’s interest to explore, understand and appreciate the ecological balance of life that help the child to orient himself in the world he lives. Through this exposure and understanding that the child is able to learn to treat his environment with care and respect.
In order to achieve the universal goal for the better peaceful and harmony world, she has recognized that human beings have tendencies to help them survive in the world. Unlike animals that have larger body that possess instincts to meet their needs, human have smaller body but greater intelligence to help them fulfill all their needs.
