How the makers of Shrek use presentational devices to show the prince As a bad character and Shrek as good? Shrek 2 is the sequel of the original Shrek. It tells the story of Shrek, Fiona and Donkey travelling to the land of far far away to see Fiona’s parents after their honeymoon. Shrek at first disagrees to go there but at the end Fiona gets her way. Throughout the whole film Shrek, the ogre is seen as a good character as opposed to traditional fairy tales where ogres are usually a sign of terror and evil. The film uses many kinds of presentational devices on both Shrek, Prince Charming and overall to reverse the fairytale tradition. Shrek at first glance is seen as a happy character enjoying his life in the swamp, but due to the fact that he is a strikingly ugly ogre, he is automatically assumed to the citizens to be evil and cruel, hence why everybody is shocked to see him and Fiona when they go to meet Fiona’s parents. The use of camera shots on Shrek are exceptional close ups of his character facial expressions, to show how he is feeling. An example of this is when Shrek drinks the potion and wakes up the next morning being transformed into human form, at this point he is shocked and we can see his reflection in the bucket of water which also is a close up. Another example of a camera shot on Shrek is when he is feeling sad, after when he sees Princess Fiona with charming. He does not act against him quickly, but instead he just leaves, which shows that he is a good character. Lighting throughout the film is used to show the mood of the characters. After Shrek sees Fiona with Charming, he goes to a tavern feeling depressed. The tavern’s dull lighting sets the mood of this perfectly. In the beginning where Shrek and Fiona are on their honeymoon, clear and sunny skies are usually shown to show that they are feeling happy and are enjoying themselves.
