A dictator usually tries to maintain strict control of educational and economical life. Books are usually banned, interests groups disappear, and people become prisoners for holding ideas deemed to be a threat to the State (the dictator is the persona of the state itself).

However, dictators enjoy popularity: Benito Mussolini was very popular initially in Italy, and Hitler garnished his image through the media in Germany and achieved near-godlike status. Idi Amin appealed to fear of foreigners and the rich to rally large groups to his side, though he was never universally liked.

Dictators often lose power by the very means they achieved it; naturally, they will piss someone off and that person will go into exile or underground, sowing the seeds for the next group of dissidents who will rally enough people behind them to seize power themselves.

Democracies are not immune to falling to dictatorship; but given enough of a choice, people will settle down
