One of the biggest problems United States trying to improve is the health care system. The numbers of uninsured individuals are growing over the years. Debates and motivated programs are developing in order to solve this dilemma. Politicians and government officials always have this topic during elections, and they promised to improve the health care system. Nevertheless, the problem still exists, and it is hurting everyone even the insured. Knowing the main factors in this problem will help narrow and fix the problem. Factors such as the individuals who make up the uninsured population, the number of uninsured, why they are uninsured, frauds and malpractice, and what affect they created for the whole country. Having health insurance is very important in each person’s life. Nearly 20,000 Americans pass away annually because they do not have health coverage. “Even people 8 out of 10 people with jobs do not have health care coverage (Buckley 2004).”
During 2006 there are estimated to be 47 millions uninsured individuals who are age 18 to 64, which is 15.8 percent of the United State population. This group is so large because elderly people age 65 or higher have Medicare and children have health coverage. “The following are the percentage breakdown for uninsured age: 7.8 percent are 18 to 20, 14.2 percent are 21 to 24, 28.3 percent are 25-34, 21.2 percent are 35 to 44, 17.6 percent are 45-54, and 10.8 percent are 55 to 64. Out of the near elderly group ranges from ages 55 to 64, there are 9.5 percent homemaker, 10.8 percent ill or disabled, 17.3 percent retired, 58.5 percent working, and 3.3 percent other (US Census bureau 2007)” .
As far as race and ethnicity is concern, Hispanic has the highest nonelderly of uninsured of 35.7 percent. Black has 21.8 percent; White has 12.6 percent.
