The Human Resource Function of a Retail Store
1. Describe the human resource manager’s role from the human resource manager’s viewpoint.
The role of the Human Resource professional in some organizations may have been to serve as the standardizing, policing arm of the company executive management. The role was more closely aligned with personnel and administration functions that were viewed by the organization as paperwork. The initial HR function, in many companies, comes out of the administration or finance department because hiring employees, paying employees, and dealing with benefits are the organization's first HR needs (Nkomo & Fottler, 2012). In this role, the HRM served executive agendas well, but was frequently viewed as a road block by much of the rest of the organization. Some employees regarded HR as the enemy and going to HR was the kiss of death for the ongoing relationship with your own manager. Employees believed, and were often correct, that the HR function was not just in place solely to serve management. The HRM role in an organization should be transforming itself to align with forward thinking practices, executive leadership that asks HRM leaders tough questions. In an environment like this, much of the HRM role will be transforming. The role of the HR manager, director, or executive must parallel the needs of his or her changing organization. Any successful organizations are more adaptive, flexible, quick to change direction and customer-centered. Within an environment like this, the HRM, who should be considered necessary by managers and executives, will be a strategic partner, an employee sponsor or advocate and a change mentor.
