As of 2005, statistics show that basic needs poverty affects 5% of Canadians, a number which amounts to greater than 1.5 million people. This is even excluding less severe descriptions of poverty, as well. It is a common misperception that poverty only strikes those without jobs or those who have drinking or drug addictions. In fact, the majority of families in poverty have one if not two parents working and bringing home an income. Poverty can strike even those who seem destined for success. Sometimes, all it could take is a stroke of bad fortune.

Poverty occurs throughout all of Canada, occurring even in provinces holding a generally positive reputation overall. For example British Columbia, which was voted “the best place on earth” to live, actually holds the highest poverty percentage in Canada, with a 21.9% poverty rate. Ontario also has a relatively high rate at 11.6%. This just goes to show that poverty is all around us,
