Human Development Index, and Why I am Interested in it. Human Development is something that every human experiences, even going back to the days of Jesus Christ, it says “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and Man” (Luke 2:52 New International Version). Since we all experience Human Development, I am most interested in learning how this subject is used and calculated in the Human Development Index or HDI. While each country has its own standards for Health and Education, I also wonder how this model helps each country develop its standards of living according to those who are ranked higher on the HDI. From a Marketers prospect, I do understand the need to know your target segment. This is done by researching the characteristics, values, etc. of that target market, which brings to questions whether or not HDI is a good tool to utilize to determine if someone should enter an International market. In this research, I would like to grow in my knowledge of what the Human Development Index is and how is it used in International Business.
What is the Human Development Index?According to the textbook, the Human Development Index is an assessment of nations based upon certain achievements (Satterlee, 2014). This index is better described as a tool that measures and rank countries levels of social and economic development based on four criteria: life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling and gross national income per capita (Human Development Index, 2016). The goal of HDI is to track and monitor which country is putting out the best overall citizens. The HDI ranking for a country is directly linked to a country’s wealth.
