There are four different ways used to assess ones personality. These are: Personal interview, direct observation, projective tests, and objective tests. With these assessments there are also four theories that are related with these assessments. These theories include: Psychodynamic, humanistic, social learning, and trait. All of these assessments relate to at least one theory. The Personal interview corresponds with psychodynamic and humanistic theories. Psychodynamic theories of personality consider behavior to be the result of psychological dynamics within the individual. These processes go on outside of awareness such as defense mechanisms. Humanistic theories believe that people deviate from their inborn capacities to construct a personality more in line with how other people see them. So their personality is developed in a way of how they want others to see them and what makes them feel good. A personal interview corresponds with these theories because they are able to capture the information they need. They are able to talk about subjects that will draw out the information that relates to what they believe and test. Being able to see how the person reacts to the question being asked explains a lot and is able to tell the interviewee if that topic is sensitive or not. Being able to talk to the person reveals a lot of the information one is seeking. Much like the personal interview direct observation also helps gain information by observing a person in an environment. Cognitive-Social learning theories correspond with cognitive-social learning theories. These theories view behavior as a product of the interaction of cognitions, learning and past experiences, and the immediate environment. They believe that experiences determine how a person evaluates a situation and that this evaluation has an effect on the person’s behavior.
