Using Cell Phones While Driving Should Be Prohibited in B.C.

The use of cell phone is a common phenomenon in the modern society. With the development and advancement of technology, more and more people rely on using cell phones because people use cell phones while driving for their convenience and for time-saving. Nowadays, using a cell phone while driving has been one of the main causes for some fatal accidents in British Columbia. However, Cell phone use while driving is dangerous not only for the sake of drivers’ own safety but also for passengers’ and pedestrians’. Although using cell phones in an operating vehicle is not the only reasons that cause traffic accidents, cell phone driving should be prohibited in B.C. because cell phone use distracts drivers’ attention, increases the risks of driving and loses physical control on the vehicle.
The first reason that cell phone use while driving should be prohibited in B.C. is because cell phone use seriously distracts drivers’ attention. Drivers have to concentrate on the situation of road but the use of cell phone can decrease drivers’ awareness of surroundings. According to McMillan, who writes “B.C. residents favor cell phone use ban … but not for them”, said cell phone use while driving causes danger apparently, so there are 85 percent residents in B.C. encourage the ban of using cell phone while driving (McMillan 4). Consequently, using cell phone in an operating vehicle should be forbidden in B.C to response the residents’ desire. The ban of cell phone use while driving is not only for drivers’ safety, but also for passengers’ safety. The article “B.C Still Weighing Cell Phone Road Rules” illustrates that drivers have responsibility to drive absorbedly and to avoid distraction from any vehicle (Nagel 1).
