Can you be identified by the way you appear? Yes, you can, but does the way you appear determine your identity? No, every little aspect of you, inside and out helps to create your identity, bit by bit. Identity is what makes you appealing to others (amongst other things). No one knows just how everyone develops a completely different and unique identity, yes, a lot of people have the same identity traits, but in the end they are very different people, when you communicate your identity is speaking through your body, our bodies would be nothing to us if we didn’t have an identity. Just as your identity is far more than your appearance, identity is much more than your nationality, as we saw in our prescribed text the Shifting Heart, which deals with the issues Italian immigrants faced in 1950’s Australia and how they were treated by white Australians, and related text Maximum Ride, The Angel Experiment which relates to the issue of how their bodies appearance gave the characters a group identity and exiled them from the rest of the world and made them vulnerable to outsiders.
When someone looks at you, they see your appearance and if you are socializing with someone they see part of your personality which is also part of your identity. You’re identity is how you show yourself to other people. Identity may mean being part of a stereotype/subculture, sporting team or community group. In the prescribed text The Shifting Heart Identity is shown through the characters particular cultural group and it shows how they see themselves with an Australian identity. The text shows us how the characters deal with their identity and how it has changed since the characters moved from Italy to Australia. In the text the Italian family has to deal with racism and scrutiny from the broader community, the description of the fence right in the text shows this, however they do have some friends in the community shown by the description of fence left and how the person on the left...
