Have you ever sat and thought about Marcia's theory on identity statuses? Well, I haven’t but I have done research on different parts of identity. Marcia theory was very interesting and descriptive to me. It categorizes four main points of identity development. These awesome points described very different identity conditions, ranging from a diffuse and indeterminate individual identity to a precisely defined and highly specific individual identity. I believe Marcia was trying to show how different people can be through the various identity statuses. These identity statuses created internal conflict and emotional conflict for adolescents, which caused them to examine and question their values, beliefs, and goals. Being a adolescents once I explored new possibilities, established new beliefs, adopted different values, and made different choices. According to Marcia's theory, these developmental identity statuses ultimately caused adolescents to develop a progressively greater commitment to a particular individual identity and the process of identity exploration prompted by developmental crises. In this essay I will give full insight on the four identity statuses.
The first identity status, identity diffusion, describes youth who have either explored or committed to a particular identity. This identity status represents a low level of exploration and a low level of commitment. In my opinion most adolescents haven't considered their identity at all, and haven't established any life goals. I know with me as I was growing up I just floated through life and dealt with each situation as it arises. For example, some teens stumble their way through high school and barely graduated their last year. Its sad because they still don't know what they want to do with their life.
