Year Round School?
The New Jersey School Board Association proposal to increase the length of the school year to twelve months. They are concerned about the growing amount of new information in all disciplines especially in the area of the sciences and world affairs. This is not an effective way to increase time for learning.
First, the school year should not be extended because students will become bored in school because they will be there for twelve months. Ten months of school is enough to get students tired, so twelve would be even worse. With no break in-between, it would not be fun. Even if a student did enjoy going to school, they would become mentally exhausted. They will be in the same setting and atmosphere for days on end. This will cause students to get bored and lose interest.
Secondly, if the school year is extended there will be less time spent with family members. If there is no time off school, there will be more absences so families can do what they need to fulfil their wishes. They will want to go on family vacations or visit relatives houses that they normally go on. Over the past few years, family time decreased a lot because of internet and social media. Studies show that because of internet and social media family time spent together has dropped by almost 35%. Year round school will make it even harder for families to bond.
Lastly, having school year round will interfere with personal growth. Students will have no time for hobbies or sports. There will be no time for students to stay active or keep up with an activity they enjoy. A personal sport I enjoy is fishing. This sport takes up most of the summer months. It would be a great disaster for me to lose a sport like this. Also, some students go to camp or their relative’s house for a week or two in the summer. That will be nearly impossible to do if there is school during this time.
