Due to the development and rapid expansion of supermarkets in some countries, many small, local businesses are unable to compete. Some people think that the closure of local business will bring about the death of local communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some people believe that the rising of supermarkets in some countries causes the permanent ending of local business, which leads to the ruin of local community. To some extent, I personally agree with their claim, but I am also of the idea that the opening of supermarket would bring people surrounding a lot of benefits.
Admittedly, there is a justification by people who are against the ideas of shopping malls development. It is certainly true that supermarkets are always got strong financially support which allow them diversify their products and services with lower prices. Therefore, local small shops wouldhave difficulty competing with the big opponents as they are no longer attractive to the customers as the supermarkets. As an unexpected result, there have been an increasing numbers of independent stores have to shut down due to the rapid expansion of supermarkets.
On the other hand, I still support the opinion that the enlargement of supermarkets would not certainly take over local communities. Firstly, as the operating on large scale, shopping malls requires a great number of employees. It means that there will be more jobs opportunities for people, which benefits the local society as a whole. In addition, instead of competing, local business would co-operate with supermarkets as they become the suppliers. The large supermarkets are likely to utilize the local capacity because they could lower the transport cost due to the short distance. Thus, the more people demand supermarket products, the higher orders that the local businesses receive.
