Rafael Cruz once said, “Only in America can someone start with nothing and achieve the American dream. That’s the greatness of this country.” Many immigrants travel to America, with little to none materialistic possessions, but rather with only a dream, the American dream. People from all over the world come to American hoping for and wanting an improved quality of life. They seek better education for their children, more job opportunities to support their families, and an overall sense of freedom regardless of their race, religion, and gender. Emma Lazarus’s “ The New Colossus” and Jimmy Santiago Baca’s “So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs from Americans” are two poems that follow the theme of immigration and the American dream.
One of the biggest opportunities for immigrants in America is their chance at a valuable education. The American dream for many immigrants is to be successful and wealthy, education makes that possible. There is more widespread education in America than many countries; the American education system provides a variety of opportunities to fit anyone’s need. From government aide such as scholarships and grants, to many type of colleges and schools, like public, private, small and large, getting an education can be made easy and possible for anyone. The opportunity of getting a good education is mostly beneficial to children of immigrants, rather than parents themselves. But the reason why many parents bring their families to America in the first place is so that their children can benefit from the education system as much as possible. A good education can open a window of opportunities for many promising jobs and careers.
