Nothing lasts forever. Having the ability to take your opponents best shot without falling is a feat that never loses its luster. When it happens, it seems to take forever, as if the oft-wished for light at the end will never appear. Then it happens – the moment ends and you have the offensive. In most cases, retrospect makes it clear that it’s never as bad looking back compared to the feelings of the moment. Those moments, turning points, are those rare instances where in one sweep all mistakes are erased or covered up, much like a fresh coat of paint does for a thirsty wall. There were more than a few of these moments in World War II. Unfortunately, the price for some of these accomplishments are still viewed as being catastrophically high, most of their alternatives were either just as bad or still worse, non-existent. However, there is light at the end of this tunnel as the results of countless brave men and women should not be discounted.
In mainland Europe the success of the Allies D-Day landings cannot undervalued in anyway, but the importance of the Allied feint that thinned the Nazi Atlantic defenses helped to create that first chink in the German war machine to be successfully exploited on Europe’s western front. Code-named Operation Overlord and taking place on June 6, 1944, the landing of five assault divisions on the beaches Normandy are among history’s greatest naval invasions. However, it might have been more difficult to achieve this success had it not been for Operation Bodyguard. An elaborate scheme designed primarily to confuse, distract, and divert the German army away from Normandy; Operation Bodyguard at its peak gave the illusion of up to five bogus Allied offenses.
