In this critical incident, it is a story about a lady who helps to manage her workforce. The way things are run around there is that whoever has worked there longer has“seniority” you could say. The people who have been there the longest help to train the new people who are just arriving. If someone has a problem at work, they go to her before hand to try and get it taken care of while it is still at a small issue. Then, if the problem is not taken care of, or if the situation escalades that is when they bring it to the boss as a team and try to work things out. One of the workers had an issue with one of the new employees and went to the manager to see what she should do; she gave her advice and was hoping it would get better from there. Consequently, the situation stayed the same so together the manager and the “senior” worker went to the boss hoping for a solution. Ultimately the boss just told the ladies that the new employees take a little time getting used to the way things work around here and it might take him or her a little more time to be in the swing of things. This was not the answer the ladies were looking for and seemed to be quite disappointed. The manager felt as though she had let her workers down.
First off I would like to introduce the use of genderlect styles into the communication experience. One reason being, the way women and men look at how things are seen. Rapport and Report are two different ways that we humans look at thing. The main thing that men are found looking at is the status of the situation; being the new workers status at the job, and how they may take a little more time to develop into how things are being run. He kept his “status” of being the big man at work and they were disappointed because they ladies knew there was nothing else that they could do to help the situation get better. Women on the other hand look at connection. This is when the Manager tried connecting with her co-worker...
