The Influence of Sports on Teens

Many teens face a time in their lives when they have trouble at school or at home and end up turning to the wrong sources for an out. Youths tend to find comfort from those who welcome them, but sometimes it ends up being the wrong people and activities. Sports play a big role in the lives of many kids by pointing them in the right direction. It is a way of introducing physical activities and helps them learn many skills. The many hours spent playing sports has great influence such as a child’s health, social skills, self esteem, and leadership skills. Also, involvement in sports introduces children to new people; teammates and coaches. Research indicates that there are many benefits of sports for teens, which during times of hormonal changes and challenging social relationships can benefit from the stability of having constant teammates, a trustworthy coach and a focus on something outside themselves (Logan).
Many teens that are tempted to participate in risky behavior are due to poor self esteem. Participation in sports can counter the negative thoughts. Teens that are so focused on completing tasks and doing positive things such as sports don’t have much time to get into trouble. Research published from the archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine showed that teens involved in a sport have higher self-esteem and are more likely to stand up to peer pressure (Logan). Sports help with social skills as well; in team sports everyone has one common goal. Achieving goals in sports can boost confidence and self-esteem. Physical activity increases chances of a better life academically and intellectually as well. To participate in sports most schools require them to have a specific GPA and not fail any classes. Youth that are involved in sports learn important lessons about team work that can benefit them later in life (McLaughlin).
