There are a couple of books and movies that have influenced my way of thinking and my self belief .Ayn Rands Atlas Shrugged & Fountain Head, I have found them so inspiring and interesting that I don’t want to finish them, and so that it is always a place I find solace when needed, my sense of rejuvenation. But in these books the protagonists are inhumanly talented, the show the triumph of human spirit ,and of capitalism in a contrast to these there is a movie Gattaca that came around in 1997 starring Ethan Hawke & Uma Thurman. I saw the movie somewhere in the year 2000, it has profoundly influenced my selfbelief and way of thinking.
In the not-too-distant future children are born into this world through gene selection. In this genetically-enhanced world, where life expectancy and disease likelihood are ascertained at birth. Parents are allowed to select their children’s gene’s based on their own.
As a genetist in the movie puts it ‘We want to give your child the best possible start. Believe me, we have enough imperfection built in already. Your child doesn't need any more additional burdens. Keep in mind, this child is still you. Simply, the best of you. You could conceive naturally a thousand times and never get such a result.’ Job interviews , are guided on the basis the genes you posses, that could be simply got through a hair sample or a hand shake, though this is not legal, there is no possible way to prevent such examinations.
On this back ground Vincent is one of the last "natural" babies born a god child who was conceived in a fit of passion in a the back seat of his parents car. His life expectancy and disease likelihood are ascertained at birth, Myopic and due to die at 30, he has no chance of a career in a society.
As Vincent ponders ‘They used to say that a child conceived in love has a greater chance of happiness. They don't say that anymore.’…’ We now have discrimination down to a science.’
