Information literacy is essential to facilitate academic and professional development originating from evidence-based research. Information literacy incorporates information finding and organization, along with an analysis, assessment, and evaluation using a research process. Technologic advances of Internet access have convoluted much information through venues, such as Google and Goggle Scholar that require increased vigilance on the teaching and acceptance of credible information sources. Health care practice requires ongoing assessment of current literature and practice in development of evidence-based practice. Information literacy establishes a process to acquire knowledge through research and continued learning in the health care field. Information literacy influences on scholarship, practice, and leadership has implication for the health care profession.

Information literacy begins with the development of information competencies. This requires teaching practices in both undergraduate and graduate level training. Prior to the Internet information acquisition was through written access. The development of the technology has changed this practice where the Internet has become the primary access for information. A primary source of information is Google. The ease of access to current technology, such as Google has the effect of decreasing the utilization of a library (Badke, 2009; Russell, 2009). With this inundating of information the ability to disseminate reproducible facts becomes increasingly difficult for those without the appropriate training.
