Personal Values
The result of my Williams Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory self-assessment is that I am most closely aligned with Character and least closely aligned with Results (University of Phoenix, 2008). After carefully reviewing the four categories, I am in agreement with my result of the self-assessment. The assessment is completely on target when it mentions that “mere compliance with rules, no matter how well-intentioned, does not make anyone an ethical person without being accompanied by consistent voluntary striving to be a morally good person” (University of Phoenix, 2008). I believe many of my characteristics may closely align with Kudler Fine Foods’ values, making me an adequate fit or better as a manager in the organization depending upon certain issues.
While I believe that the category Character is the best reflection on my values, I do cross-over into the Obligation category; however, I do not have a blended category as stated by the assessment (University of Phoenix, 2008). The qualities I advocate in an individual are honesty, wisdom, and integrity. This goes directly in-line with the core values of the Air Force and is something I have lived daily for the last 18 years of my career. I strive to develop my practical wisdom and sound judgment and mentor my subordinates to do the same. This is one way to assist in everyday decision making. Another perspective I tend to value from the Obligation category is “the right choice does not necessarily benefit the decision maker” (University of Phoenix, 2008). I also subscribe to some aspects of Heifetz theory, such as the use of authority to direct problem resolution and allocation of resources to solve those problems (University of Phoenix, 2008, Ch.14). I tend to point people in the right direction to get the information necessary to assist them in solving their problem or conflict.
