Insufficient English Education at Public High Schools in Turkey
In recent years, English became universal language. It is used in everywhere. Have you paid attention your surrounding? We can see English wherever such as on button of washing machine, button of radios, in music or on signboard of stores. Although English is not our native language, people should know this. Eighty percent of students can understand English in countries of European Union. On the other hand, how many people speak English in Turkey is not known. Many of universities have English profiency exam but number of students which can not pass the exam is increasing every year because English is not taught efficiently at public high schools in Turkey. There are two main reasons why English can not be taught adequately at public high schools in Turkey.

The first reason is that government of Turkey does not allocate sufficient budget for English education at public high schools. There is lack of audio-visual equipments at there. For example, there are not televisions or recorders in each classes. They are important to develop students’ listening and speaking skills. Televisions and recorders enable students to listen and watch something in English. As a result of this, student can learn pronunciation of words correctly in the way. Students should practice for listening and writing skills. Audio-visual training addresses to visual intelligence. Moreover, these equipments prevent lessons from being boring. Lessons can become more interesting with the equipments. In addition, English books supplied by the government have insuffienct information. They do not have adequate vocabulary, reading, writing and listening parts. For this reason, these books do not used in lessons. Instead of them, teachers advise other books, such as Oxford, Cambridge publications, to use in place of English books supplied by the government.
