 Intimate partner violence is a serious problem that affects millions of people in the world. Intimate partner violence is defined as violence between partners that could lead to bigger problems such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. This paper will be addressing the variety of effects intimate partner violence has on people in regards to the different types of intimate partner violence and various causational risk factors and hypothesis concerning intimate partner violence.
Intimate partner violence has been the cause of much heartbreak in a large number of relationships. To understand what is meant by intimate partner violence, we must define specifically what it entails. An intimate partner can be a husband, wife, ex-husband, ex-wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, or dating partner. Intimate partner violence is not solely associated with one gender. It is ambiguous and prevalent in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. Violence in intimate relationships is defined as intentional physical harm of another person that occurs between two people and includes overt physical violence such as hitting, slapping, kicking, punching, and choking. The product of such violence is intentional physical harm that results from physical violence is pain and other physical injuries. Another type of violence that’s included in intimate partner violence is emotional abuse which includes behavior such as yelling at or verbally degrading a partner or child; however, it can also take the form of belittling, shaming, humiliating, ignoring, rejecting, or limiting physical contact. Another included violence that stems from intimate partner violence is sexual abuse. Sexual abuse includes, but is not limited to, unwanted sexual contact, sexual coercion, and rape.
