An Introduction to Learning

Learning is by far one of the most complicated happenings within the mind. It is a process that occurs through out the life span and changes who and what a person is. The tendency for learning to transform someone is so ingrained and fundamental that it is often forgotten. Learning can in many ways be seen as the most powerful process in human and organizational development. Learning can lead to many different things including increases in aptitude, connecting concepts, moving from one state of knowing to another, as well as explicit changes in thinking or behavior. Because of its importance psychologists, educators, and scientists of many varieties have studied it in depth. The concept of performance is an example of how learning affects and relates to these fields, such as the study of behavior. Due to the amount of research and complexity of learning, there are several theories as to how one learns and the processes involved. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the relationship between performance and learning, as well as take a brief look at different conceptual approaches to studying learning.
Although learning has been previously defined it's important to understand the concept. Learning relies on the attainment of different types of knowledge supported by information we perceive. It often leads to the development of new ideals, skill sets, values, preferences, etc. Learning functions can be performed by different brain learning processes, which depend on the capacity of the learner, the type of knowledge which has to be acquitted, as well as on socio-cognitive and environmental factors. Learning can range from simple forms of learning such as classical conditioning or perfecting biological functions seen in both humans and animals, to more complex activities such as play and socialization, which are seen in mostly higher-thinking animals.
