Is Iraq a Just War? With the always looming possibility that the draft may be started again someday in the near we must begin to think what we will do if this possibility becomes a reality. The Just-War theory is a very good guideline available to us and may be used to assist in our own decision making about whether or not we would be willing to go to Iraq and fight. According to the work of Augustine of Hippo and St. Thomas Aquinas a just-war must be fought for a just cause, be declared by competent authority, have right intentions, have comparative justice, have a probability of success, have proportionality, and it must be the last resort. (pg. 307) By using this theory I do not believe that the War on Iraq is a just war because it fails to have right intentions, comparative justice, and it was not the last resort. A top Vatican official stated that, “the war was useless and served no purpose” (www.americancatholic.org). Because this war is not a just war I would not be willing to fight in it so I would become a conscientious objector to the war. When we found out that wasn’t exactly true we were told that we needed to get rid of Saddam Hussein and stabilize the country. We did that and now we still have troops in Iraq with no end in sight. This leads me to believe that the war on Iraq is being lead without right intentions. I disagree with going to another country and killing people for no reason. If the draft was started again I would become a conscientious objector to the war. I do not think morally I can go...
