Motivation
A popular way of thinking about employee performance is as a function of the interaction of ability and motivation, that is performance = f(A * M). We can see that motivation plays a key role. Motivation is processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence of effort toward attainting an organizational goal. When someone is motivated, he or she tries hard. But only effort that is directed toward, and consistent with, the organization’s goals is the kind of effort that we should be seeking. According to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory, within every human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualization. I think to nowadays people, esteem and self-actualization are the elements needed be considered. The later one is represented by the drive to become what one is capable of becoming includes growth, achieving one’s potential and self-fulfillment. So, when we try to motivate others, we’d better combine the goal with their needs and always ask ourselves the question “What do people want from their jobs?” Expectancy theory predicts that an employee will exert a high level of effort if he or she perceives that there is a strong relationship between effort and performance, performance and rewards and satisfaction of personal goals. For effort to lead to good performance, the individual must have the requisite ability to perform, and the performance evaluation system that measures the individual’s performance must be perceived as being fair and objective.
I want to share a case about motivation occurred in my life. As a student of business school, it is common to build a team especially for courses. As the score of every team member is the same, it’s important to motivate everyone make a contribution to the task instead of having to do the complex process all by yourself, especially when you are the team leader.
