Router and Switch Configuration
When you are getting ready to add a switch to your network there are a few steps you
need to do to insure that it is running the way you want it to. The first one is easy, find a spot
where you want to place it and have easy access to it. After plugging it in you will want to use
the command line interface to get the switch configured. This can be connected to either a
management station like a PC or a Modem. To do this you connect from the console port on the
back with RJ-45 that comes with the Switch when you buy it. A brand new switch will come
without a password installed and one need to be put on are you can’t access the configuration or
switch management interfaces. When starting it up you will not need an IP because it will just
automatically connect to the internet.
Time to get this switch configured, so to get this started you will need to use the CLI. The
CLI is the exec command interpreter and by using CLI it will show all the commands that you
can use witch will help you get everything configured. When you come to the main screen of the
switch it will let you know all about it and what buttons do what. Let’s say you type M it will
bring you to the all the menus you can use and K will take you to the CLI so you can make
changes to the network. To work with the password you type P.

spanning tree instance for each VLAN configured in the network. It uses ISL Trunking and
allows a VLAN trunk to be forwarding for some VLANs while blocking for other VLANs. Since
PVST treats each VLAN as a separate network, it has the ability to load balance traffic (at layer-
