Jazz is considered as more than a music genre, and is characterized by improvisation and syncopation. It pushes music past the confines of organized structure, although it is often arranged. A few very notable jazz musicians are Miles Davis, Chet Baker, and John Coltrane. These men all chose brass instruments as their tools of trade, playing the trumpet and the saxophone. They were each able to manipulate their instruments to convey feeling. There are many well known jazz vocalists as well, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Etta James, among others. In Jazz, the improvisation of the instruments and voice is done to mimic life, be it a conversation or even the way a person sways when he or she walks. The crooning of the instrument can resemble the voice of a person, it can portray the higher pitch of someone excited or the slow, raspy drawl of one who has just woken up. In regards to the vocalists, they developed a style of singing called scat-singing, which is done to emulate the sound of the instruments. This improvisation prevalent in Jazz is a testament to its universality. People from all walks of life, and of any sexual orientation or gender can find a companion in jazz music. With jazz, there is an understated tone of understanding, which resonates within the soul of a person. Jazz does not make an overt stance against the LGBT community. Jazz music promotes sensuality within the male and female sexes, making it easy for those who identify in other categories to assimilate. As a music genre which is revered not only in the United States, but all across the world, jazz is not constrained by the superficial nature of the collective society in which we live nor by the popular culture which dominates our individual lives.
