Staying awake while onduty is important for many reasons. First of all, I could potentially endanger not only myself, but also the rest of my unit. Should an enemy slip by while I slept, they could possibly kill everyone though any number of other means. Families could be destroyed because of my mistake. But the damage may not stop there. A soldier is called upon to remain alert most of all, for upon his shoulders rests the fate of an entire country. I am such a soldier. I did not fulfill what was required of me and now I pay the price. Fortunately, nothing came of my failure, but something easily could have. It is uncalled for and very selfish for a soldier or any other military personnel to fall asleep while at a post or on guard. It shows that he or she is selfish on their sleep time and not caring for what the mission is calling for.They have shown that they can’t be trusted to stay awake for a few hours to watch a small area or simply do the same thing others are doing.

When you are on guard you are responsible for everything that occurs within the limits of your post while you are on duty. You are also responsible for all equipment and property located within the limits of your post. The exact limits of your post are defined by the special orders. The special orders should also include every place a guard must go to perform your duties. You will investigate every unusual or suspicious occurrence on or near your post provided that you do not have to leave your point of duty to do so. If necessary, you or the NCO who is on guard with you will contact the chain of command for instructions. While on guard you will remain at your place of duty and continue to perform all duties required until you are relieved by proper authority.
