The women of Brewster place are a novel told in seven stories written by Gloria Naylor who is a novelist, essayist, screenplay writer, columnist, and educator. The primary character of each chapter is all women and residents of Brewster place. Brewster place is a housing development in an unnamed city. It seems destined to be an unfortunate place since the people linked to its creation are corrupt. The life history of Brewster place comes to resemble the history of the country as the community with each historical shift. Following the civil rights era, Brewster place inherits its last inhabitants, African-American, many whom are migrants from south half of the United States. The stories within the novel are the stories of these residents. The theme of the story is style historical context and is set in history.
Kiswana is a young woman from a middle class black family and one of the six women portrayed in the novel. She is different from all of the Brewster places residents in that she has chosen to live there voluntarily. She is a bright girl with dreams of social revolution for Brewster places. She is certainly a rebellion, free spirit that characterizes the young and comes to a deep contrast with the past. Kiswana whose real name is Melanie, was born and raised is an affluent black suburb, linden hills. She had an idealistic and yearning to help others. She dropped out of college and moved into Brewster place to live amongst other African-American people and in order to fight for the cultural and class revolution she so ardently believed in. She wants the community to be socially and maidenly reformed. She believes she can effect real social change in the black community. Kiswana is young and naïve but full of optimism and ideals. During one scene, she is sitting and daydreaming while at her window she sees a pigeon flying up into the sky. She placed her dreams on the back of the bird and fantasized...
