Knowing Your Audience
According to the course material thus far, knowing the form of communication to use and the correct information to include in your statement, it will guarantee that the your message will be received with its maximum potential and effectiveness. Knowing the audience that will be receiving the message will assist you in ensuring the message is delivered correctly and that the audience completely comprehends the message without any misconceptions or confusion. In the case of the 33 Chilean miners that became trapped more than 300 feet underground, company communication to the public and the families was crucial, How they chose to communicate and represent the disaster would permanently mark them in the eyes of the public, and the families that depended on them to save their loved ones. You must understand what your target audience is expecting in such a serious and devastating event.
Communication to Families of Miners
I believe this would have to be the most difficult part, especially when dealing with such a tragedy. The individual who will be delivering the message to the family’s needs to keep in mind the current state of mind that the families will be in, and must make sure to remain empathetic to that. The company needs to provide reassurance to the families, they need to provide as many detail as they possibly can as well as having the information they need to be able to answer any questions the families may have. This includes what and how the incident happened as well as what is being done to save and protect their family members. In providing this information it will help to provide the family with a sense of security and less of a sense of hostility toward the company.
