Reggaeton music is a genre of music that is very popular today. It catches the ears of many young people and even reminds the older population of the music from their time because reggaeton music is a mixture of many genres of music throughout time. Reggaeton music became popular around the mid 1990s but it has been around since the 1970s. It originated in Panama. This genre has blends of Jamaican influences of reggae and dancehall and also from Latin America music such as Bomba, which is one of Puerto Rico’s most famous musical styles, It has Plena, which is a traditional style of music from Puerto Rico. Also Bachata and merengue , which originated in the Dominican Republic. And last but not least from North America the blend also included hip-hop and electronica. These blends are called the elements of Reggaeton. Reggaeton music can easily be recognized by the bass instrument used in all songs by all artists. It has spread all over the world within the past 10 years. Latin America has the biggest population of fans. North America, Europe, Asia and even Australia have audiences and fans of this genre of music. Reggaeton is a genre that the Hispanic youth from Latin America and North America consider their own.
In the present day, true origin of Reggaeton has changed from Panama to Puerto Rico. Current artists of this genre are from Puerto Rico. Most say Puerto Rican stars are the ones who popularized the music. Puerto Rico has elevated a new form of Reggaeton which is called perreo. It is slightly controversial in the sense that it leads to the alleged exploitation of women with the form of dancing along to songs of perreo. People against the music say that it also influences violence and crimes in Latin America because of certain rappers topics in music.
