Korean War 1950 Overview

The Korean War is a war that sometimes is overlooked. Also known as the Forgotten War those who fought will certainly never forget. On the 25 of June 1950 the Republic of Korea was invaded by the North Korean Peoples Army. Despite indications that it would lead to an invasion the Pentagon was caught off guard completely. The North Koreans swept through the south overwhelming opposition standing in its way. The North Koreans aim was to take the Port of Pusan located at the south of the Republic of Korea. The United States with several other UN forces hurriedly moved into position to defend the Port of Pusan and push back the enemy. While there are several significant battles in the Korean War, the battle of Heart Break Ridge is one of them. The Battle for Heart Break Ridge started on 13 September with the 9th Infantry launching an attack on Hill 728. They were to give fire support to the First and Second battalions of the 23rd who were on hill 931. The first of fighting was tiring and long. The US troops did not make out so well. The enemy was well entrenched and launched bombardments of mortars and called upon their own artillery. On the 14th both the 9th and 23rd continued their assaults around hill 894. While some troops on adjacent hills halted in place for the night and began to dig in, the 23rd had a small breakthrough. They had success in attaining the crest of the ridge which joined hills 931 and 851. At 1900 hours the 23rd set up for the night. The North Koreans were not pleased with the breechof these crests. They launched heavy attacks through the night desperately trying to reestablish their net-work of entrenchments. The 23rd succeeded in repulsing them all. On the 15th at around 0700 hours the 9th Infantry jumped off to gain hill 894. Fighting fiercely against ruthless resistance the Manchu Regiment gained the crest by 14:45.
